Syringe Exchange Progam

Do you know TPAN operates one of the busiest syringe exchange programs (SEP) in Illinois? Injection drug use and infectious diseases make SEPs essential. SEPs have been shown to reduce the incidence of HIV by a third to a half. TPAN's Health Access Resources Team (HART) program provides free sterile syringes, counseling, and support services through our SEP. We also offer advice on vein health, injection safety, and HIV/hepatitis prevention. SEP clients can also receive Narcan. Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose quickly. Since 2019, TPAN staff have distributed 80,000 syringes and 500 Narcan kits.

Paws N' Effect

TPAN's Paws N' Effect program is the only one of its kind that connects people living with HIV with dogs that need homes. Our program partner is felines & Canines, an animal adoption center in Rogers Park. This program aims to improve mental health and treatment adherence issues for people living with HIV. Paw's N' Effect is the brainchild of Julie Supple, TPAN's Chief Program and Impact Officer, and Rob Garofalo, a longtime Ride for Life Chicago participant. With the support of Rob's foundation, Fred Says, staff find the right canine family member for clients enrolled in the program. The program has already changed lives. One client told us, "I strongly believe that the Paws N' Effect program can transform lives, and if sharing my experience can help the program get attention, count me in!"

Youth Services

For almost 35 years, TPAN has been committed to empowering all lives affected by HIV, especially those of our most vulnerable, particularly LGBTQ youth. Our programs for youth ages 18–29 have offered various activities, individual counseling, and a safe drop-in space, but the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to adapt. We now provide  our younger clients with a food pantry and laundry services, in addition to helping them get connected to services such as medical care, housing and more.

HEALTHY OUTCMES THROUGH PREVENTION AND EDUCATION (HOPE)

TPAN's HOPE (Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Education) program is for same-gender-loving males, 18-24. We discuss important topics such as mental health, HIV, spirituality, and how to keep ourselves safe and sane during these challenging times. Jeffrey Pulliam is the program manager for the HOPE program. He and his team make sure clients are off the streets, even if it's a temporary shelter, until long-term housing can be secured, have food, and transportation to get to important appointments. Jeffrey also oversees TPAN food pantry. He says, "Many of my clients don't know where their next meal is coming from. With the pantry, I know they will have enough food to last them a few days until they can come back to TPAN.”
