Curtis Hardman Quote

For almost 35 years, TPAN has been committed to empowering all lives affected by HIV, especially those of our most vulnerable, and particularly LGBTQ youth. Our programs for youth ages 18–29 have offered various activities, individual counseling, and a safe drop-in space, but the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to adapt. Meet one of TPAN’s staff members who has risen to this challenge—Curtis, TPAN’s youth case manager.

Curtis Hardman, Youth Services

What do you do in your position?

I’m a youth case manager and a program facilitator for EPIC, TPAN's HIV and substance abuse program for young, same gender-loving men. As a youth case manager, I help LGBTQ- identified young people overcome the concerns that prevent them moving forward in their lives—from finding a safe place to live, to finding healthy food, to finding treatment for HIV. As a program facilitator for EPIC, I lead conversations about important topics like mental health, trauma, relationships, spirituality, gender identity, HIV status and race so our clients become more empowered and make the best decisions for themselves.

How would you describe your clients?

My clients are resilient and powerful individuals. Though they each have fundamentally different socioeconomic backgrounds and levels of privilege, the experience of trauma is collectively shared. In my role at TPAN I have the opportunity to witness their strength and perseverance during challenging times.

What challenges are your clients facing during the COVID-19 crisis?

The biggest challenge my clients are facing is finding and building community. For many, the crisis has been incredibly isolating so they now have a deeper appreciation of the importance of human connection.

What advice do you give your clients?

I tell my clients to remember the moments that brought them joy. Despite what is happening in our social, political, and health climate, reflect on those moments to get through difficult times.
